It is true that the symptoms from quitting smoking are far less severe than many believe, and that they can easily be overcome.

It is important to understand right from the start that the physical symptoms of quitting smoking are nowhere near as bad as those associated with withdrawing from hard drugs, which often cannot be achieved without medical treatments and supervision. A substitute drug will often be prescribed to give the patient the chance to adjust slowly to the drug free state. This happens to some extent with nicotine as well, but it is important to realize that the majority of people who quit smoking successfully do so without any kind of aids or substitute drugs. Any withdrawal symptoms are mild enough in most cases to be overcome without further medical treatment, and this fact should be made known to everyone who wants to quit smoking.

If the physical withdrawal symptoms start to become a problem there are steps which can be taken to combat this. The best defense of all is to follow a healthy lifestyle and to make sure that you keep your vitamin intake high. Many water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C are destroyed by smoking, and it can take some time for the body to adjust to being able to absorb the vitamins properly again. If keeping your body fed with the right nutrients does not stop the cravings, they can be satisfied by using nicotine in the form of gum or through a patch.

These common treatments to relieve stop smoking symptoms are often used as crutches by people who are trying to quit smoking right from the start. This has a poor record of success, as it just emphasizes to the mind the need for the substance which the body is trying to break away from. The lessening of the physical symptoms can be less important than the setting up of a crutch in the mind. The most important part of quitting smoking is convincing the subconscious mind that the body can survive without the drug, and that it will even be better off without it.

The most frightening symptoms can come from the inner subconscious mind, when it is convinced that tobacco smoking was one of the reasons why the body survived, and this crutch has just been removed. The mind is capable of creating the most worrying symptoms in response to what it perceives as a loss, and the best way to deal with this is in advance. By using hypnotherapy, the mind can be convinced that smoking is negative and that the body will be better off without it right at the point where the cessation of the habit occurs.

Even if this is done, some of the physical stop smoking symptoms can still appear. While the use of nicotine substitutes is to be avoided if possible, they can be used if it is necessary to get over a short term hurdle. This should never last for more than a month after the last cigarettes were smoked, otherwise you will simply be substituting one crutch for another. Once the nicotine disappears from the body and proper nutrition takes over, a full return to health can be made which will result in the permanent ending of stop smoking symptoms.
